Enron
The video below describes the show as...Sexy...Exciting....Brilliant...
I would choose: A disaster of epic proportions.
While the historical facts of the implosion of the Enron Energy Corporation was indeed such a disaster, so too is this production. The merits of the piece are that it can be likened to a re-imagining of newspaper theatre. The play is certainly informative (assuming the plot is historically accurate), but there is sadly nothing dramatic about the content. As such, the director is forced to pastiche together a bit of rock music, a bit of country line dancing, a light-saber extravaganza, and a sex scene reminiscent of Spring Awakening in order to entertain the audience. This fails to add up to much.
From an educational standpoint, what can be learned is that theatre can still be used as a means to disseminate topical information. At the same time, however, without proper crafting by a playwright and director working in concert to illuminate the material in an interesting and stylistically appropriate way, it can be one long, boring, uneventful, character-less disaster of epic proportions.
